About AWS Well-Architected Framework
The Well-Architected framework has been developed to help cloud architects build the most secure, high-performing, resilient, and efficient infrastructure possible for their applications. This framework provides a consistent approach for customers and partners to evaluate architectures, and provides guidance to help implement designs that will scale with your application needs over time.
The Five Pillars of the Well-Architected Framework
Operational Excellence: Focus on running and monitoring systems to deliver business value, and continually improve process and procedures.
Security: Protect information and systems. This includes confidentiality, data integrity, privilege management, managing security incidents, and controls.
Reliability: Try to prevent failure. When it occurs, be able to recover quickly. Consider setup, cross project requirements, recovery plans, change management, high availability, automated deploys
Performance Efficiency: Pick the right resources - be they instances, containers, or functions - and types to maximize utilization. Consider storage efficiency, database technologies, performance at the edge, and leverage services.
Cost Optimization: Avoid unnecessary costs. Pick the right instance types. Analyze spending overtime. Consider spot instances and geographical distribution. Tag well and manage lifecycle.
AWS Well-Architected Framework General Design Principles
Automate your process as much as possible
Secure your infrastructure at every layer
Scale only when capacity demands
Evolve your architecture to adopt emerging technology
Meet RTO & RPO objective
Incorporate resiliency in your application
Organize game days occasionally
Advantage of AWS Well-Architected Framework
Build and Deploy Faster: Stop guessing capacity needs, test systems at scale, and use automation to make experimentation easier by building cloud-native architectures.
Lower or Mitigate Risks: Understand where you have risks in your architecture, and address them before your applications are put into production.
Make Informed Decisions: Determine how architectural decisions and/or trade-offs might impact the performance and availability of your applications and business outcomes.
The AWS Well-Architected framework includes strategies to help you compare your workload against best practices, and obtain guidance to produce stable and efficient systems so you can focus on functional requirements.
